How to Build a Bible Reading Habit That Actually Sticks

We all know that reading the Bible is essential for our spiritual growth. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Yet, despite our best intentions, staying consistent remains one of the most difficult habits to maintain. Life gets busy, we get tired, and suddenly weeks have passed since we last opened the Word.
If you're struggling to stay consistent, you aren't alone. God's grace covers our missed days. But to grow, we need a strategy. Here are five practical, grace-filled strategies to help you build a reading habit that actually lasts.
1. Start Small (Really Small)
The biggest mistake people make in January is deciding they are going to read the entire Bible in 90 days. They start in Genesis, get bogged down in Leviticus, miss a day, feel defeated, and quit entirely. Instead, commit to reading just one chapter a day, or even just a few verses from the Psalms or Proverbs. Consistency over decades is far more transforming than a sprint of high volume.
2. Practice "Habit Stacking"
It’s incredibly hard to build a new habit out of thin air. Instead, attach your Bible reading to a habit you already do every single day without fail. Do you drink coffee every morning? Place your open Bible next to your coffee maker the night before. Read while the coffee brews. By linking the new habit to an old one, your brain has a built-in trigger.
3. Establish a Time and Place
If your plan is to read "sometime today," you probably won't. Decide exactly when and where it will happen. "I will read my Bible at 7:00 AM on the living room couch." Creating a dedicated physical space trains your mind to enter a posture of worship and focus when you sit there.
4. Read for Transformation, Not Information
The Bible is not a textbook to be skimmed to check a box on a reading plan; it is the living, active Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). When you read, don't rush. Read a passage twice. Pause, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth to you, and ask yourself: "What does this say about God? What does this say about me? How does this change how I live today?"
5. Have Grace for the Missed Days
You will miss a day. It is inevitable. The enemy wants you to turn that one missed day into a missed week out of shame. Do not fall into legalism. God is not angry with you because you slept through your alarm. When you miss a day, simply pick it back up the next day. The goal is relationship, not a perfect attendance record.
